Profil épidémiologique et évolutif de l’anémie du nouveau-né au Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Régional de Ouahigouya au Burkina Faso

Introduction: Anaemia is common during the neonatal period. The prevalence of neonatal anaemia is poorly defined in the literature, particularly in Africa. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic, and evolutionary aspects of neonatal anaemia in our setting.
Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study covering the period from 1 January to 31 December 2023. It included all neonates hospitalised at the Regional University Hospital of Ouahigouya in whom anaemia was diagnosed either on admission or during hospitalisation.
Results: The prevalence of neonatal anaemia was 17.1%. The mean age of neonates at admission was 3.4 days. The sex ratio was 1.1. Respiratory distress and prematurity were the main reasons for consultation. Clinical findings were dominated by neurological signs (52.4%) and signs of respiratory distress (45.4%). The mean haemoglobin level was 10.8 g/dL. Severe anaemia was observed in 4.3% of neonates. Neonatal infection (51.1%) was the most frequent cause of anaemia. Outcomes were favourable in 63.8% of cases. The mortality rate was 34.1%. Factors associated with death were neonatal resuscitation at birth (p=0.002) and deterioration in general health (p=0.004) in multivariate analysis.
Conclusion: Neonatal anaemia is common in our setting, often occurring in the context of neonatal infection. Prevention relies on high-quality antenatal and postnatal follow-up.
