Soins maternels kangourou: état des lieux de la mise en oeuvre dans le service de Pédiatrie du centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bogodogo

Introduction: Kangaroo maternal care (KMC) is an alternative to conventional neonatal care in low birth weight (LBW) newborns, particularly in developing countries, to reduce neonatal mortality.
Methods: This was a descriptive retrospective collection study from January 1 to August 31, 2022, involving all newborns with a birth weight of less than 2500 g, admitted to the paediatric department of the CHU-B.
Results: We collected 287 low birth weight infants, including 121 (51.49%) benefited from KMCs, with a sex ratio of 0.78. The mean birth weight was 1403.80 g. The time to KMS was less than 7 days in 31.4% of cases, with a daily application time of at least 6 hours in 68.6% of cases. The mean length of hospital stay in KMC was 09.82 days. Anaemia (53.71%) and jaundice 32.23%) were the main associated pathologies. The evolution was marked by an average weight gain of 25.81g per day in SMK compared to 11.25g per day before SMK. Discontinuations of KMC were noted
in 4.13% of cases with the sole reason of the occurrence of complications in the patient. The cure rate in KMC was 97.52% and a death rate was 0.83%.
Conclusion: KMCs remain an effective method for the management of newborns with NPF. It is essential to disseminate them in all health facilities.
